Track Your Stolen Laptop Remotely with Prey Project

Having you laptop stolen can be a nightmare. Not only have you lost your investment in your portable computing device but you probably are in the risk of having your valuable data like passwords, account information, private data stolen and compromised.

Prey is a lightweight open source app that helps finding your laptop by reporting its location.

Prey helps you locate your missing laptop by sending timed reports with a bunch of information of its whereabouts. This includes the general status of the computer, a list of running programs and active connections, fully-detailed network and wifi information, a screenshot of the running desktop and β€” in case your laptop has an integrated webcam β€” a picture of the thief.

Prey uses a remote activation system which means the program sits silently in your computer until you actually want it to run. If so, it gathers all the information and sends it to your Prey web control panel or directly to your mailbox. The thief will never know his movements are being watched.

Prey Features

  • Geo-location aware
  • Wifi auto connect
  • Lightweight
  • Modular architecture
  • Powerful report system
  • Messaging/alert system
  • Full auto updater

Prey wakes up at specified interval and checks a URL to see if it should star gathering traces and send a report. You could also configure Prey to run in a standalone mode where the report directly goes to your input. Configuring Prey through the URL gives you the most control from a web page and easiest to use.

The cool thing is if the laptop doesn’t have an internet connection, Prey will attempt to connect to the local wifi access point available.

Prey is a free download for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.
