I just learnt from Kyle at Kyle’s Cove that today is Software Freedom Day. This introduction at the official site explains a lot about celebrating this day which aligns a lot with what I am trying to do with ShanKri-la. Letting technology assist us in our daily lives.
In a time when our lives are increasingly dependent on technologies, it is important we take the time to consider the impact of technology on our lives, and the importance of ensuring technology isn’t used to limit us, but rather to take us further along a path of opportunity, innovation and freedom for all people.
Ever since someone opened the door for me to Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), I have been fascinated by the selflessness and the power behind this movement. I try to use many of the free software available as much as possible.
Instead of finding and using it for myself, I try to share my findings with my friends and readers through this excellent medium.
If you use free and open source software, tell your friends about it. Educate people you know that there are excellent alternatives available these days and you don’t have to pay for proprietary software. I am not against paying for quality software but doing everyday stuff with your computer doesn’t have to as expensive as it used to be.
Hope you have fun exploring new software.
Thanks for supporting software freedom!
It always surprises me the number of people thinking they have to pay $50.00 a year to renew their anti-virus software, or people that think Microsoft and Windows are the only thing available.
Software Freedom Day will be successful if even a few people lose their ignorance on this subject!
Not a problem, Kyle! I know.. I try to convince some of my good friends to try gmail, firefox, gimp, openoffice.. but no they like their hotmail, Office, norton & Photoshop.. 🙂
Maybe if atleast one person opened up through this post that is a great victory to this movement.
