Free Software to Rip Blu-Ray Discs – MakeMKV

There are plenty of solutions for ripping DVDs now and DVD Shrink is my long time favorite even though I believe it has been discontinued. It is still available as a free download from many sources.

But, Blu-ray is becoming more and more common place but ripping Blu-ray discs hasn’t been that easy.

MakeMKV beta is a one-click solution to convert your DVDs or Blu-ray discs to a free and patents-unencumbered format you can play anywhere.

MakeMKV can convert Blu-ray discs to the MKV file format that can be played with free media players such as VLC Player. Or you can choose to convert MKV files to a more common format such as mp4 or avi using free software such as Handbrake.

  • Reads DVD and Blu-ray discs
  • Reads Blu-ray discs protected with latest versions of AACS and BD+
  • Preserves all video and audio tracks, including HD audio
  • Preserves chapters information
  • Preserves all meta-information (track language, audio type)
  • Fast conversion – converts as fast as your drive can read data.
  • No additional software is required for conversion or decryption.
  • Available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux
  • Functionality to open DVD discs is free and will always stay free.

I wonder how long it will be before that small company gets a DMCA takedown notice for being able to decrypt DVDs and Blu-ray discs? There are other software competitors, but they’re in places where the DMCA can’t touch them.
