Yesterday, I wrote about an elegant solution to CSS authoring that is free and simple to use. When I was writing that I thought that I should share the gem I have found in this free HTML Editor – HTML-Kit. (unfortunately Windows only – sorry linux and mac users. If you are Linux user, you might already be using Mozilla’s Nvu or Quanta Plus )
HTML-Kit
HTML-Kit is built and delivered for free by the folks at Chami.com. They have a bunch of other useful tools helpful for a webmaster so make sure you check it out.
HTML-Kit is not your ordinary HTML editor it is the swiss army knife of web development. You can author a lot of file 
types HTML, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, VBScript, ASP, PHP, JSP, Perl, Python, Ruby and anything else you can put your finger on! Almost anything.
Now, the quick facts:
- Highly customizable and extensible. If you are a Firefox user, you will see a lot parallels with community driven plugin support for HTML-Kit.
- It is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) which means its functionality goes way beyond just editing different file types. Reduces the number of tools and time you need to get a project done.
- Preview IE-Netscape-Mozilla side by side (huge plus when you are making changes to your blog templates)
- Real time syntax highlighter.
- Workspace access to ftp sites or network drives which means you can connect to your blog through ftp, edit and save changes right from HTML-Kit.
- Configurable periodical auto-save in the editor and auto-backup before uploading to remote sites.
- Insane number of preview options.
- Code snippet manager lets use reuse your code easily.
- Ability to extend HTML-Kit through it’s plugins interface. The plugins page hasn’t been updated since Sep 2006 but the number if plugins that extend the existing functionality is truly awesome! It spans from 1999-2006!
It wouldn’t be fair to call the above list a review because the features it offers is mind-boggling yet does not the make the application bloated. Go here for an extensive list of all the features.. it really is amazing.

You are so right! I’ve been using HTML-Kit for years. I’ve tried others, but I kept coming back to this one. It’s amazing how so much can be offered for free. Guess I ought to take the leap and become a full-fledged owner of it. 🙂
