I was just listening to the audiobook – In The Plex: How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes Our Lives (book review) and was fascinated to learn how YouTube was developed and what happened behind the scenes when Google acquired it.
Well, it is YouTube’s 6th birthday and this little infographic Google has posted shows how far they have come. It is astounding to see that we are uploading 48 hours of video uploaded every minute!
We’re amazed that over this last weekend, you drove YouTube past the 3 billion views a day mark, a 50% increase over last year. That’s the equivalent of nearly half the world’s population watching a YouTube video each day, or every U.S. resident watching at least nine videos a day.
I can’t help but wonder about the massive infrastructure Google must have in place to support such volumes of data. Again, the book goes into some of the details on Google’s datacenters as well that will give any geek a kick to hear.

The record that youtube receives 3 billion views a day is a great milestone. Youtube certainly is the ultimate video site. Hope it celebrates many more birthdays and deliver quality service like at present.
