How to Get Websites to Serve HTML5 Video to Safari on Mac OS X?

It has been now proven that Flash sucks battery life even out of Macbook Pros and Macbook AIRs.

Apple (read Steve Jobs) has been against Adobe Flash on mobile devices since the launch of iPhone and iPod Touch.

Now, people have proven Apple does this for good reason as they found running Flash content on the web reduces battery life significantly.

One way to improve battery life on your Mac OS X is to trick websites to server HTML5 video instead of Flash.

A lot of popular video hosting services like YouTube, Vimeo, etc have started streaming their video content in HTML5 format for devices like Apple iPhone and Apple iPad.

So, if you can trick those websites to think that you are accessing their website with one of these devices, you can watch videos in HTML5 format and save battery life.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball details how you can achieve this on Safari on Mac OS X.

It basically involves changing the user agent Safari serves the web server to think you are actually on an Apple iPad.

Interesting. I do hope there’s way to use this guide for laptops running with windows 7. I followed the link and it’s only for laptops running in MAC OS.
