What’s New in WordPress 3.0?

WordPress – the popular blogging platform – is nearing another major version release, WordPress 3.0.

In fact, Automattic just announced the release of WordPress 3.0 beta 1 and you can download it right now to try it.

But, remember it is not ready for production use!

WordPress 3.0 Features and Changes

  • WordPress and WordPress MU to be merged
The multi-user project WPMU and WordPress is becoming one! This will make creating sub-sites via sub-domains or sub directories very easy going forward. [how to]
  • Custom Menus – need I say more?
  • Custom Post Types – this feature will extend WordPress from being a blog to becoming more of a Content Management System without jumping through hoops.
  • New Default Theme – not a huge change but remember how long the current default one has been the default. Twenty Ten is the new WordPress default theme now.
  • Bulk Update of Plugins & Themes – huge time saver
  • Custom Background
  • Default Admin Username – one of the first things I do is to change the ‘admin’ user name in WordPress installs. Now, you can choose one while you install it.
  • Custom Taxonomy UI for Pages as well as Posts

Again, remember this is an early beta but if you are a plugin/theme developer or just a curious George and would like to take a look at WordPress 3.0 beta 1, here is the download link
