It has been a while since I have covered Mozilla Labs. It is one of the cool places where some of the cutting edge web technologies like Prism, Personas, Ubiquity, Bespin, Snowl, Geode, etc.
Mozilla Weave is one such technology out of Mozilla labs. Weave enables you to have incredibly rich, personalized experiences across the web. Weave is a Firefox add-on that is aimed at making your web experience richer while giving you control over your data and personal information.
What is Weave Sync?
Is that too vague? With Weave installed, you can use your computer at home and when you leave your home and on the commute open your mobile Firefox in your phone, you get the history, open tabs, bookmarks, the Awesome Bar etc will be waiting in your phone for you. When you get to work, again you have everything waiting where you left off in your phone.
Weave Sync Features
Weave Sync currently supports continuous synchronization of your bookmarks, browsing history, saved passwords and tabs.
- Get the same results on the Smart Location Bar on each of your Firefox browsers, so you can get to your favorite sites with just a few keystrokes
- Continue what you were doing: have the ability to open any tab you have open on any of your Firefox browsers
- Keep the same list of bookmarks on all of your Firefox browsers
- Easily sign in to all your favorite sites using your saved passwords (this is especially handy on mobile phones, where it’s hard to type in complex passwords)
- Do it all securely: Weave Sync encrypts user data before uploading it to Mozilla’s servers, so that only you can access your data
Weave Sync 1.0 beta 1
Weave has been in beta versions for a while and version 1.0 beta 1 has just come out and this is a great time to throw some spotlight on it.
- Weave 1.0 beta is going to do a fresh upload of all your data.
- Weave 1.0 beta includes incremental sync behavior. This helps immensely with performance which wasn’t so great in earlier versions.
- If you don’t trust, you could setup your own Weave server to store your data and you have to add an apache alias line for the 1.0 URL.

My $0.02
I am a big fan of Mozilla Labs products and I try to stay on top of it as much as I can. I used Weave when it came out and it looked like it could replace my favorite bookmark sync add-on Xmarks (previously Foxmarks) to sync bookmarks, passwords across all my computers. But, it was buggy and slow.
Now, that Weave Sync has hit 1.0, I have installed it and give it a fresh try to see if it really can replace Xmarks for me. I will post my experiences in a couple of weeks.
