Feedly – Fun Alternative For Google Reader Interface

Feedly is actually a Firefox add-on that turns your favorite feeds in Google Reader into fun magazine style start page.

I am an avid RSS feeds consumer. I subscribe to hundreds of RSS feeds in a variety of topics and hardly go to individual websites to get my news in the morning.

Between Twitter and Google Reader, I can get a quick handle on what’s going on in the world in a few minutes every morning.

I have tried and reviewed various RSS feed reader applications – both desktop feed readers and web apps here before. But, Google Reader is the next best thing to sliced bread when it comes to web based feed readers.

I have several different folders/categories I group my feeds into and dig into them depending on my thirst for certain topics throughout the day. I have done this for around 2 years now and I am bored. Google Reader interface is simple and functional. And boring.

Google Reader Stylish script like this one can make it a little bit exciting. For a short while.

This is where Feedly comes in.

Feedly isn’t anything new. Feedly Firefox add-on has been around for a long time but something prompted me to try it out again last week. And I’m hooked.

Let’s see what Feedly does:

  • Feedly lets you import all your RSS feeds from Google Reader, browser bookmarks, Netvibes or Bloglines
  • Feedly presents your boring rss feed content in a visually appealing magazine style layout
  • Visual Modes – Digest, Photo Grid, Cover and Explore modesfeedly-layout
  • Share Stories – Twitter, Email, Delicious, Facebook, Google Reader, Ping.fm, Evernote, Instapaper, Posterous support
  • 1-click setup – for new users quickly sets up from your Firefox Places so you can get up and running immediately.
  • Explore – Feedly Explore is a new directory/search service so users can see what other Feedly/Google Reader users are reading and sharing.
  • It also helps in finding best blogs in a topic . For eg. you want to find out about iPhone jailbreaking and Feedly will show you suggested feeds with recent articles in a magazine layout. You can subscribe to the whole topic instead of just a few blogs to keep yourself informed in this area.
  • Featured sources – I have been finding many good sources through this recommendation area in the side
  • Keyboard shortcuts – Just like Google Reader Feedly has keyboard shortcuts you can use to navigate between feed items
  • Latest, Friends, Comments, saved, Shared & History – Feature rich making you wonder why you were using Google Reader all these days!
  • Syncs with Google Reader
  • Feedly Notify – While you are Googling for a topic, Feedly overlay shows you relevant blog topics from the feeds you have subscribed to in a notify panel in the bottom right corner.

Whether you are new to reading news via RSS feeds or a veteran Google reader ninja, Feedly has an interface that is refreshing, functional and makes reading news via RSS feeds fun again. It certainly did for me.

Feedly 3.0 is getting ready for a final release shortly and one of the new features is Feedly Themes!
