Jinni Goes Public With More Features

I just reviewed Jinni – the intelligent movie recommendation engine last week. It was in a closed private beta but Jinni has opened to public since.

As Jinni was opened for public signups, it also added a few additional features.

  • Jinni got social – automatically connect with people you invited, check neighbors, follow interesting movie lovers, and find out who is following you.
  • Sharing – You can share interesting pages on Facebook and Twitter. More features such as RSS to come soon
  • Movie Personality – A sketch on the recommendations page tries to offer you a visual representation of movies you like

Plus, for a limited time for every Jinni signup they are donating to Best Friends Animal Society. So if you were postponing to try this service you could feel good about doing something good while you are at it.

Have you used it extensively yet? Is it better than Netflix’s recommendation engine, or different in a way?

I really like some of the aspects of the way Netflix recommends movies, but there is no way to really “re-work” the recommendations other than giving movies you do not want to see a bad rating (which in turn tells netflix that you have seen them, rather than don’t want to see them). I’ve experienced even checking not interested, simply does not show that movie anymore but does not modify the rankings at all.

I’d be interested to hear how well Jinni does it before I sign up.
