Facebook – the social networking giant has acquired FriendFeed.
FriendFeed is a service that aggregates feeds from various social networking services and web services and shows it in a real-time stream of activities.
For eg. you could just friend me in FriendFeed and you will be able to see everything I do on major web services. For eg you can follow my updates on Twitter, my favorites on YouTube, pictures on Flickr, sites I share in StumbleUupon, movies I rate/recommend in Netflix, links I share via Delicious, etc in one place.
Having failed to acquire Twitter, Facebook tried to emulate FriendFeed with Friend activities with their last redesign. The ‘Like’ button introduced was so close to what Friendfeed had.
TechCrunch reports the deal happened a week before and the story is just breaking. I am glad for the FriendFeed team to have had such a huge success.
Facebook is looking to integrate the ideas from the FriendFeed engineers into their own products. FriendFeed itself will continue to be available standalone until it becomes completely integrated into Facebook.
So, you don’t have to worry about your FriendFeed account at the moment.
I am starting to use Facebook more these days and I am looking forward to seeing how this acquisition stands to change my experience in Facebook.
I think Facebook has bitten off more than it can chew.
